Counseling

We at Cancer Care Resources hope to provide you with the highest level of professional services to help you in coping with your cancer experience. Counseling is provided by our staff of social workers and counselors who specialize in working with people with cancer and their loved ones. Duration of counseling varies depending on the nature of the treatment and the client needs. The number of counseling visits will be determined by you and your counselor. Services are provided free of charge.

The following services are offered:

Assessment of Service Needs: In coordination with Cancer Care Resources nurses and oncology clinic staff, the need for additional services will be assessed and coordinated. Examples include: financial assistance, home health, placement outside the home, in-home assistance, respite, transportation, self-care, nutrition/exercise, counseling, and support groups.

Psychosocial Assessment: For complex situations as identified by staff, an in-depth psychosocial assessment will be completed. This will include an evaluation of support and coping resources and may identify individuals in need of greater intervention.

Counseling and Support Groups: As appropriate, cancer counseling services are available to patients and families. Appropriate referrals include patients experiencing:

  • Significant distress
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Family struggle related to a cancer diagnosis

Counseling may be provided by the social work staff at Cancer Care Resources, or as appropriate, will be referred to community or hospital appropriate cancer counseling services. (e.g: Providence/St. Vincent’s, Legacy, Portland Adventist, OHSU, Southwest Washington, Kaiser Cancer Counseling Programs; or to community psychologists or psychiatrists with expertise in cancer).
